Effect of photobiomodulation in secondary intention gingival wound healing—a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract Background Photobiomodulation is widely being used to improve the wound healing process in dentistry and a vast majority of studies have proven its benefits. But there are plenty knowledge gaps according optimal laser characteristics which should be maximize effects lasers. The goal this systematic review meta-analysis was determine effect photobiomodulation (PBM) as an adjunctive treatment periodontal therapies evaluate secondary intention gingival post-operative pain. Methods Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, Web Sciences) were searched up November 30, 2020, for clinical trials that reported result application PBM on wounds pain discomfort after surgeries. Two independent reviewers selected eligible outcomes interest extracted. quality assessed using Cochrane Handbook Systematic Reviews Interventions. Results Ultimately, twelve included review. adjunct surgeries resulted significant improvement indices. Landry index at 7th day significantly improved (SMD = 1.044 [95% CI 0.62–1.46]; p < 0.01) + surgery groups compared control groups. There also statistically increase complete epithelialization (RR 3.23 1.66–6.31]; 14th methods assess heterogeneous, therefore results limited made assessment not possible.
